The Road Professional''s Guide to CONEXPO-CON/AGG Exhibits

A preview of new technology that will be on display at construction''s largest show.

With more than 2,000 exhibits covering literally millions of square feet of space, next month''s CONEXPO-CON/AGG extravaganza can overwhelm even the hardest-working show-goer.

As part of Better Roads'' continuing series highlighting aspects of the show that pertain to road professionals, we invited several hundred exhibitors who market to the road industry to provide a preview of the products or services they will feature at the show.

We present this preview as a way for you to focus your show hours on getting to specific exhibits and asking questions about specific products.

Asphalt Products
Roadtec
Two new asphalt pavers

Roadtec will highlight two new 8-foot paver models introduced late in 2007. The RP-170 is a rubber-tired machine and the RP-175 moves on rubber tracks. Features include 174-horsepower, Tier 3 engines, dramatically increased fuel capacity, reduced noise, and swing-out seats with new operator control layouts.

Wirtgen: Vogele
Vision series pavers

CONEXPO-CON/AGG will mark the first public showing of Vogele''s new Vision series pavers, which are said to be quieter, cooler, and more productive than the competing models. Featured will be the 10-foot Vision 5200 track and wheel-mounted models. Like the other Vision models, they are said to give operators unparalleled all-around visibility without turning. Swing-out operator stations and sloping machine and hood lines allow the operator unfettered view of the sides, the hopper, the conveyor, and to the front and rear of the machine.

CEI Enterprises
Counter-flow drum mixer

CEI Enterprises will use CONEXPO-CON/AGG to introduce the Rap King, its 180-tons-per-hour counter-flow drum mixer which is capable of processing mixes containing up to 50% recycled asphalt product. The design is said to combine great fuel efficiency with lower hydrocarbon and VOC emissions than other designs, and it can be packaged as a portable or relocatable plant.

Bergkamp
Advanced microsurfacing controls

Bergkamp will introduce its new electronic mix control and diagnostic system for its M310 slurry seal/microsurfacing paver at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. EMCAD allows the contractor to evaluate production and make adjustments while the machine is working. It simplifies material calibration and shows current and average material ratios, total material used, and material rates to efficiently track costs and production. It also assists with on-board control troubleshooting. It comes standard on Bergkamp''s new M3 Series and is optional on its M1 full-size continuous paver.

Astec
Green asphalt production

Astec will use 1/8 scale models to show technical innovations in its relocatable M-Pack facility, and its portable Six Pack asphalt facility. Included in the display will be the company''s Double Barrel Green system which allows producers to reduce fuel consumption by 15%, increase production by 14%, eliminate smoke, and use a higher percentage of recycle by producing mix at lower temperatures.

Asphalt Drum Mixers
Full line of plants

Asphalt Drum Mixers will feature its full line of portable and stationary plants at CECA. ADM calls its Milemaker Series, with its dual drum counter-flow design, the industry workhorse. The design separates drying and mixing into different drums, reducing production time and costs. Also on display will be ADM''s parallel-flow Roadbuilder and SPL Series plants.

Bomag Americas
Redesigned tandem roller

The redesigned Hypac C766D tandem roller will be on display at the Bomag exhibit. Operator comfort improvements include an innovative sliding/swivel seat and intuitive controls. It has infinitely variable vibration frequencies up to 4,000 vpms and has an "Eco-mode" that throttles down the engine during pauses, reducing noise and fuel consumption.

Wirtgen
Mid-sized mills debut

Wirtgen will display the new W 120 F, one of several midsize milling machines the company has introduced in recent months. The 304-horsepower cold planer cuts 48-inches wide and as deep as 12.6 inches. It has a hydraulic swinging track for flush cutting and a front-end loading system via a two-part conveyor. The W 120 F is available on tracks (standard) or wheels.

Hamm
Compact asphalt rollers

Hamm Compaction will display its new line of compact asphalt rollers in the Wirtgen America booth at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Four models will be shown, ranging from the 31.5-inch HD 8 VV to the 54-inch HD 14 VV. All VV models allow vibration in both the front and the rear drum, in just the front, or in just the rear drum.

Minnich Manufacturing
Vibration monitor


Minnich''s new Auto Vibe Monitor works with the company''s vibration control system to give the operator a simple readout of the paving vibrators'' vpms. The system allows the operator to control the paving vibrators with the touch of a button and, once set, the system increases or decreases hydraulic flow to maintain the desired setting.

Power Curbers
More versatile slipformer

Power Curbers will feature the C-series edition of its model 5700 curb-and-gutter, sidewalk and barrier slipforming machine. The new 5700-C now can pour from the right side as well as the traditional left side, and it has a swivel chute that allows it to pour in a single traffic lane with the concrete truck lined up in front, rather than to the side.

GOMACO
Digital control system

GOMACO says it has revolutionized their machine controls with the advent of the company''s new G22 digital control system. The G22 has improved on the features of the G21 system, featuring a dual language option and easy-to-understand graphical displays with colored pictograms showing the machine''s functions.

CemenTech
Volumetric concrete mixers

CemenTech manufactures mobile and stationary volumetric concrete dispensers with capacities ranging from 2 to 12 cubic yards and production rates ranging up to 200 cubic yards per hour. The company''s mobile dispenser will be on display at CECA and at work in the demonstration area.

Messinger
Optional belt conveyor

Messinger will exhibit its Curb Fox 5000 with a new optional belt conveyor for more flexibility and productivity. The conveyor lets the machine work at different grade levels relative to the concrete truck, and it allows the truck to work to the side of the prepared grade, rather than on it.

Metal Forms
Screeds and forms

Metal Forms will exhibit its Speed Screed truss screeds as well as its steel barrier and bridge parapet forms. The screeds feature reversible double-life aluminum finishing tubes, self-contained power, positive crown control, and widths up to 75 feet.

Power Pavers
Paves up to 32 feet wide

Power Pavers will feature its SF 2700 concrete paver. It paves up to 32-feet wide with integral curbs on one or both sides and can pave up to 16-inches deep on the go, with no changes required to the machine. It is designed to pave residential and inner city streets as well as primary roads.

Zimmerman Industries
On-site volumetric mixing

Zimmerman will show its Zim-Mixer 400N which stores sand, stone, cement, and water separately on a truck, then mixes them precisely to specification at the job site. The 400N is available in models with 4- to 11-cubic yard capacities, and comes with a hydraulic lift and a power swing as standard equipment.

Permanent pothole patches

UPM will exhibit its patented Permanent Pavement Repair Material, a proprietary cold-mix product that is guaranteed in writing to stay in a hole and outlast the pavement around it. The mix can be applied any time of year, in any weather conditions, and is custom blended for specific climates.

Diamond Products
Grinding, grooving, and slot cutting

Diamond Products will display its full line of grinding, grooving, and slot-cutting equipment, as well as many of its Core Cut diamond blades and Core Bore core drill rigs and core bits. A video kiosk will spotlight a PC6000EC grinding unit, a PC130B bridge deck groover, and a PC150 bump grinder in action.

Kennametal
Long-life planing tools

Kennametal is introducing a new series of road planing tools designed for improved performance and longer life. The Road Tazor RZ Series tools feature re-engineered carbide, new tip profile geometry, and an advanced forging process that makes the tip the hardest part of the tool.

Midwest Industrial Supply
Low-cost solutions

Midwest says it will present a new environmentally friendly technology in road surfacing and management that offers a relatively low-cost solution. The company says its product uses native materials and Soil Sement, a polymer product, to create predictable structural performance and stabilized community roads.

Allianz Johnston
Rugged and maneuverable

Allianz will feature the MS/MT350, a new sweeper with 4.5 cubic yards of hopper capacity, dual steering controls and operating positions, and a 60-gallon fuel tank. The machine has been designed for ruggedness and maneuverability. It is available in single- or twin-engine format and features direct hydraulic broom drive, a variable height debris dumping system, and one-button operation for all sweeping functions.

Sweepster
Advanced loader-mounted sweeper

Sweepster''s CS High Dump Sweeper turns compact or traditional loaders into sophisticated sweepers. It attaches to the loader boom with an exclusive parallel linkage and rides on four casters, allowing it to follow ground contours independently. Other features include large diameter brushes (26 or 32 inches), and a clam shell dump design.

M-B Companies
Sweeper for large loaders

M-B Companies will feature their Model LLB attachment broom designed for full-size wheel loaders. The LLB has 32-inch diameter brushes and comes in 6, 7, and 8-foot widths. It features dual casters and a rear pivot that allow the broom to follow the contours of the surface. An adjustable baffle keeps bristles clean, allowing the buck to fill completely before dumping.

Coneqtec
Slices through concrete

Coneqtec will show its Universal slot cutter, which attaches to a skid-steer loader and slices through concrete to its base. The attachment uses a high-torque, direct-drive motor to deliver power directly to a 9-inch or 12-inch cutting wheel. Cutting depth is changed by using the loader''s bucket controls.

Asphalt Zipper
All-new reclamation attachment

Asphalt Zipper will use CECA to introduce its newest full-depth reclamation attachment to the world. The AZ-550 is the most powerful Asphalt Zipper yet, with a 203-horsepower auxiliary engine producing 695 foot-pounds of torque. The attachment mounts on a wheel loader and can cut asphalt pavement and base up to 12-inches deep.

Leading Edge Attachments
Rip bucket for mass excavators

Leading Edge will show the newest addition to its line of Multi-Ripper buckets, the new Hi-Cap model designed for use with 200,000- to 300,000-pound excavators. The staggered shank on an arc design allows the bucket to dig though rock, coral, or frozen ground. Leading Edge says it delivers eight times the force of a standard excavator bucket and is four times faster than using a hydraulic hammer.

Kenco
Self-leveling pipe hook

Kenco''s presentation of construction attachments will be highlighted by the market''s first self-leveling pipe hook. Unlike traditional pipe hook designs, the new Kenco model doesn''t require a counterweight or special input from the operator – just insert it into the pipe and lift, says Kenco. An internal balance unit does the rest, maintaining a level carry whether loaded or unloaded.

Handy Hitch
Compact roller for graders

Handy Hitch will display its Profile Packer/Rollers at the show. Available in 75-, 90-, and 120-inch widths, the new design attaches to a motor grader, enabling it to grade and compact in a single pass. A new frame has three main pivot points located at the rear of the machine. It is linked to an arm assembly that is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder and central accumulator system for down-pressure control.

Helac
Multi-purpose jaw bucket

Helac will show the newest member of its PowerGrip buckets, a model designed to fit 5-ton excavators. The new bucket is 24-inches wide and weighs about 525 pounds. Like the other PowerGrip models, it can be used as a general purpose excavating bucket, as a trenching, grading, or clamshell bucket, or as a grapple or hydraulic thumb.

Atlas Copco
New demolition attachment

Atlas Copco will show its new CC 2500 demolition attachment. It provides more than 300 tons of cutting force at the jaw tip and its single-pin jaw-retention design improves operator visibility and reduces the time required to switch jaws. An advanced speed valve improves productivity by shortening cycle times.

AIM Attachments
Full line of excavator buckets

AIM will display its heavy-duty, severe-duty, and ditch-cleaning buckets at CECA. The buckets feature hardened-steel construction with AR400 steel cutting edges and side cutters. The AIM HD45 excavator bucket for 40,000- to 45,000-pound excavators offers thick horizontal wear straps, full-curve side-wear straps, and D-rings; it is available in heavy-duty or severe-duty configurations.

Giberson
Crusher attachment for excavators

Giberson will display and demonstrate its four Eco-Crusher excavator-mounted jaw-crusher buckets. The line ranges from the BF60 for 18,000-pound excavators to the BF120 for 68,000-pound excavators and larger. The BF60 produces up to 15 tons per hour, while the BF120 produces up to 99 tons per hour.

Loegering
Bolt-on undercarriage

Loegering will display its VTS versatile track system which is a complete rubber-track undercarriage that bolts directly to a skid-steer loader''s hubs. The undercarriage has a bidirectional suspension system that adjusts independently on each side of the loader to maximize foot print and power.

Earthmoving

Kobelco
Award-winning excavator

Kobelco will display the new 264-horsepower, 79,600-pound SK350LC Acera Mark 8 excavator which won a Better Roads Top 50 award for 2007. The SK350LC leads its class in bucket and arm digging forces and has a power boost switch that provides 10% more power on command for increased bucket breakout force.

Champion
Powerful compact grader


Champion will feature its C86 C all-wheel-drive grader at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. It combines compact dimensions with high front-axle clearance and big grader performance to handle everything from haul roads to maintenance chores. Champion''s dedicated hydraulic system for all-wheel drive means the rear drive system receives full power when AWD is engaged.

LBX Company
95-horsepower excavator

LBX will introduce the Link-Belt 130 X2 at the show. The 95-horsepower unit has more engine and hydraulic horsepower than its predecessor and is more fuel efficient, according to the company. Like other X2 models, it is said to have exceptional cold-start capabilities thanks to glow plugs, automatic "idle-start," and auto engine warmup features.

Stone Construction Equipment
12-ton vibratory soil compactor

Stone will feature its 84-inch vibratory dirt roller, the Rhino 84X. The 12-ton machine offers compact forces up to 63,000 pounds and features an oversized, high-comfort cab as standard equipment.

The cab includes heat, air conditioning, and satellite radio, as well as oversized windows for excellent visibility.

Ditch Witch
New family of trenchers

Ditch Witch will feature its new Zahn series of trenchers at the show. The Zahn 300, one of three new models, is said to be the most powerful and productive trencher in the 30-horsepower class. The two-wheel-drive R300 powers two types of front-end trenchers while a four-wheel-drive InterChange model accepts up to seven types of front ends – trencher, plow, dumper, tiller, backhoe, stump grinder, and tool carrier.

Morbark
Advanced wood waste processing

Morbark will use its CONEXPO-CON/AGG exhibit to educate everyone involved in wood waste processing on its advanced grinders. Featured machines will include the best-selling 1300B track tub grinder, and two horizontal grinders, the high-production 4600XL Track Wood Hog and the new 3800 Wood Hog. All of the company''s grinders feature digital feed and monitoring systems.

Alamo Industrial
Cuts grass, weeds and limbs

Alamo will highlight its Axtreme Boom Mower, a rugged workhorse available in lengths of 18, 22, and 25 feet. A telescoping 28-foot model is coming soon. The mower reaches embankments, over guardrails, and up into trees with ease. It cuts grass, weeds, and limbs, and can handle trees up to 8 inches in diameter. Cutting heads are available in many sizes.

Schulte
Cutter for demanding work

Schulte will feature its XH1500 Series 3 rotary cutter, designed for demanding commercial and agricultural applications. Its protected deck is designed for durability and to eliminate the build up of debris. An increase in frame depth and blade-tip speed results in a superior flow of material, while tandem walking axles result in smooth operation over rough surfaces.

Turbo Technologies
Powerful hydroseeding system

Turbo Technologies will feature its newest hydroseeding system, the HM-500-HARV. The powerful hydromulcher features a 25-horsepower engine, hydraulic reversible agitator, gear pump for heavier slurries, and a poly tank for fast, easy cleanup. It has a 50-gallon flush tank and electric-rewind hose reel, as well as a heavy-duty platform with a multi-position turret gun.

Rayco
Improved super crawler

Rayco will exhibit its improved Rayco C100. Designed for forestry applications, the 96-horsepower crawler now boasts a hydraulic flow rate of 39 gpm at 5500 psi pressure. It also has an advanced forestry cooling package, allowing it to run long hours in any temperature without overheating.

Super job site lighting system

Allmand will feature its SHO HD lighting system for portable light towers. The system uses 1,250-watt lamps that produce 150,000 lumens, a 30% increase in light output and a 20% increase in coverage area compared to Allmand''s 1,000-watt system. The lamps are designed exclusively for use in Allmand''s SHO parallel lamp fixtures.

American Highway Products
Safety ring for manhole covers

American Highway Products will feature its Manhole Safety Ramp, a durable rubber safety ring that protects raised manholes during construction projects. The reusable ramps are dropped over exposed risers during construction to protect motorists and manhole structures from damage.

Work Area Protection
Lighting for road work zones

Work Area Protection will display its new Nite Lite, which it says is the first portable work-zone light designed specifically for the road construction industry. The lightweight, portable light produces a highly visible, non-glaring white light and draws only 4 amps at 120 volts AC from a 60Hz electrical source.

Oil Skimmers
Removes oily wastes

Oil Skimmers will show its Model 6V oil recovery system which uses a specially formulated collector tube to skim oil from water surfaces. The oil adheres to the outside of the close-loop tube, and then the tube is drawn into the oil skimmer and through scrapers that remove the oil. The tube then returns to the water to skim more oil. The Model 6V can skim up to 100 gallons per hour.

HCSS
Heavy construction software

HCSS will demonstrate its HeavyJob field management software, The Dispatcher resource management software, and HeavyBid estimating software at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. The Dispatcher has an integrated GPS feature which allows mangers to make better decisions based on accurate equipment information.

Exaktime
GPS-enabled time clock

Exaktime''s PocketClock/G turns a Windows PDA into a GPS-enabled time clock, recording the exact location of workers as they clock in and out. Individual workers clock in and out using a private PIN, or a manager clocks them in and out. The system has a Geofence feature which provides an alert when a device with the PocketClock/G enters or leaves a designated location.
