lling Machine

The new generation of milling machines is stronger, faster, and more reliable than ever before.  Here’s a look at the latest models.

Caterpillar Global Paving
Half-lane, single pass milling

Caterpillar Global Paving says their Cat PM200 Cold Planer is a high-production, half-lane milling machine with excellent maneuverability and plenty of power to perform full-depth removal of asphalt and concrete pavements in a single pass. The machine has an operating weight of 68,135 pounds, a 79-inch cutting width, and can cut as deep as 12.6 inches. It is driven by an emissions-compliant, 575-horsepower Cat C18 diesel engine with ACERT Technology.

The track-driven machine features four steering modes for high maneuverability. The 925-gallon water spray tank provides cooling water for long periods of operation; an optional second water spray system can provide greater cooling performance during heavy-duty cutting. Other features include dual operator stations, two propel speeds, optional automatic grade and slope controls with a Sonic Averaging System, an electronic load-control system to prevent engine stalls, and a Cat wet clutch and Cat D8 planetary drive on the rotor drive system for smooth, reliable power transfer to the rotor.

Terex Roadbuilding
Wide-stance utility mill

The new Terex PR330 utility mill from Terex Roadbuilding features a wide 18-foot, 4-inch wheel stance and a low center of gravity for sure-footed operation in the field. The company says the 16-inch-wide tracks deliver sturdier operation and better traction than competitive units with 9-inch-wide tracks. An exclusive double-parallelogram rear suspension design keeps the tracks level to the grade and evenly distributes the weight when operating on uneven terrain.

The cold planer features a number of options and is available with either a four-track or four-wheel drive system to fit the needs of the contractor. It is available in milling widths of 24, 36, and 48 inches. The cutter’s clamp-shell connector design offers fast and simple width changes in about one hour.

Four steering modes — front only, rear only, front and rear crab, or coordinated front and rear (cramp) — enable the machine to deliver an inside radius as small as 9 feet, 8 inches. A center-mount cutter design positions the full weight of the machine over the rotor. The subframe parallelogram design delivers a 24-inch elevation to lower and raise the cutter in and out of the cut. The planer’s standard 40-inch-diameter drum cuts a 48-inch-wide path at depths up to 12 inches. The drum’s 0.5-inch bullet tooth spacing leaves a smoother surface than most standard machines, according to the company.

Roadtec
Compact cold planer

The latest and most compact addition to the Roadtec line of cold planers is the RX-400, a 4-foot cold planer with a rear-mounted drum that allows a cut as narrow as 26 inches. It allows contractors to start the cut directly in front of curbs, fences, walls, or other obstructions. The compact design is an advantage when working on shoulders and other narrow milling projects. Features include milling widths of 2, 3, and 4 feet; a maximum cutting depth of 12.5 inches; a 325-horsepower Caterpillar C9 ACERT engine; and a maximum operating speed of 172 feet per minute. A conveyor swing of 60 degrees to either side adds to its versatility.

Wirtgen America
Exchangeable cutter widths

The new Wirtgen W60 milling machine replaces the W 600 CD, with a 20% increase in engine power and an enhanced ergonomically designed operator’s workplace. It cuts to 12-inches deep and has a flexible rear loader, making it ideal for trench and channel work. The 2-foot-wide cutter can be exchanged with different widths via the optional Flexible Cutter System and can be equipped with the new Level-Pro leveling system. Features include a powerful 211-horsepower Deutz engine and an operating weight of 30,865 pounds, making it suitable for milling large surfaces and removing entire pavements at full depth. The machine is available as a three-wheeled model, or as a four-wheeled model at the customer’s request.

Asphalt Zipper
Full-depth reclamation attachment

New for 2008, Asphalt Zipper says their AZ-550 Full-Depth Reclamation attachment is the most powerful and productive milling attachment yet. A powerful 203-horsepower Cummins, Tier 3, turbo diesel with 695 foot-pounds of torque combined with a new oil-cooled planetary gearbox improves production on heavier projects with up to 12-inch-thick cutting depths.

Dynapac
Two-joystick operation

Dynapac’s PS2000S is a compact, hydraulically powered, high-capacity cold planer with four-track steering, a front loading system, and a mechanical belt-driven cutting drum. The machine is operated by means of two joysticks (driving and conveyor-belt functions) and by clearly laid-out control and monitoring functions, making it simpler to operate. Automated sequential processes — conveyor belts and water-spraying system — ensure that operators can concentrate on planning operations and benefit from reduced quantities of water and fuel consumption, as well as reduced conveyor-belt wear. Other features include a Cummins QSX 15 diesel engine, a 977-gallon water tank, a working width of 79 inches, and a cutting depth of 13 inches. The planer’s transport weight is 62,000 pounds; working weight is 68,000 pounds. It is used to remove both asphalt and concrete pavements.

Zanetis Power Attachments
Milling attachments

Zanetis Power Attachments launched a new series of RoadHog milling attachments for loader backhoes and wheel loaders above 13,000 pounds. The attachments are completely self-contained with their own 75-horsepower, or optional 140-horsepower, diesel engine that transfers power to the drum via a hydraulic clutch. Units attach to loaders using pin-on or optional quick-attach brackets. The attachments are available in 30-, 40-, and 60-inch cutting widths with a 10- or 12-inch cutting depth capability. A wireless remote controller activates engine functions, as well as hydraulic depth and sideshift control of the drum.

Coneqtec/Universal
Open drum design

The Coneqtec/Universal AP cold planer has a patented open drum design with a direct-drive high-torque motor that eliminates re-milling. The four-wheel front-down design and center pivot eliminate bouncing and reduce noise and dust. Models are available in 12- to 48-inch widths and have electric or hydraulic control options. All models are pre-drilled for water kits.

Roadtec
Variable cutter system

The Roadtec VCS Variable Cutter System allows the RX-500 and RX-700 cold planer models to cut at widths of 24, 36, and 48 inches without having to remove the cutter housing. Changing cutter widths is fast and easy. The primary conveyor is shifted over 8 inches so the discharge belt is visible to the 26-inch drum, making material removal easier. A hydraulically adjustable, segmented rear moldboard comes with the VCS. It easily adapts to all three cutting widths.

Bomag
Half-lane coverage

The BM 2000/50 and BM 2000/60 cold planer milling machines from Bomag are designed to remove damaged or deteriorated asphalt surfaces from highways, streets, and parking lots. The machines are easily transportable and offer a 79-inch cutting width that removes a half lane of road surface in one pass. Both planers are powered by EPA Tier III-compliant Deutz water-cooled diesel engines. The BM 2000/50 features a 469-horsepower engine that delivers a 2.8 horsepower-per-cutting-tooth ratio and a maximum working speed of 112 feet per minute; the 590-horsepower engine on the BM 2000/60 provides a 3.5 horsepower-per-cutting-tooth ratio with a maximum working speed of 98 feet per minute. Both models come standard with four-track steering and are capable of milling depths up to 12.6 inches. A centrally located operator’s station offers great jobsite visibility while dual grade and slope controls allow simple and safe operation from either side of the machine or from ground level. A front-loading, hydraulically foldable discharge conveyor makes transport to and from the jobsite easy.

Woods Equipment Company
Cold planer for skid steers

The Woods Alitec CP-Series high-flow cold planers for skid-steer loaders are available in 16-, 18-, 24-, and 30-inch cutting widths with 50 to 77 teeth. The cold planers feature a hydraulic cutter that cuts up to 6 inches in depth and has a 22-inch hydraulic side shift. Operators can hydraulically tilt the machine plus or minus 15 degrees. The machines maneuver easily around manholes and storm drains and are excellent for bridge decks where heavier, dedicated planers are not allowed. Other features include dual-depth cylinders, a universal quick-attach coupler system, double-reduction planetary drive, debris guards, top-accessible drum, and a pick-removal tool. Optional stripe removal and step drums are available.
