There are many pavement-related factors that influence fuel consumption. The most important to understand is that of pavement roughness. Pavement “roughness" refers to ride quality, and is directly related to the condition of the surface and the smoothness of the pavement. It has been shown that roughness has an impact on fuel consumption, regardless of whether the surface is asphalt or concrete. For instance, the work completed by the Nevada Automotive Test Center at WesTrack indicated a 4.5 % savings in the amount of fuel used by trucks traveling on smooth rehabilitated pavements compared to just before the rehabilitation. |
