ABSTRACT

This Interim Report documents the results of Phase I of AAPTP Project 04-02: PG Binder Grade Selection for Airfield Pavements. This report inculudes a review of current technology in the PG grading system and its potential application to use in airfield pavements. The report also discussed the use of a system for selecting PG binder grades have been developed and are described in this report, along with plans for competing the development of this system. Two different apporoaches for selecting binder grades for airfield pavements are proposed: one involves use of the newly developed LTPPBind 3.1 software for selecting PG binder grade for highway pavements, the other relies on the previous of this software. Both procedures involve applying various grade adjustments to account for differences between aircraft loads and commercial trucks. The procedures will be evaluated by comparing recommended PG grades with those used on a wide range of airfield pavement projects, and in consideration of the observed performance of these pavements. The final selected procedure will be implemented in an easy to use spreadsheet, and will be documented in a technical note in FAA format.
