Vietnam highway project stalls
Some 10km of Vietnam''s Ho Chi Minh highway have yet to be completed, despite the fact that they were due to become operational two years ago. The project has effectively stalled because of problems associated with clearing land. The area causing concern at the moment is located in the northern province of Hoa Binh. The government has proposed sending in a special team to work out reasonable compensation to landowners affected by construction work. Some 2.1 million m2 of land in the province are needed for the 68km of road being built there. In total, 3600 households have been directly impacted by the work. Initially, land clearance was completed in November 2003, but delays in construction have effectively resulted in many people illegally moving back, effectively making it impossible for the road builders to continue.
