Mexican highway project gets raise

Plans are in hand to construct a new raised highway for the Periférico Norte highway in Mexico. The road will be tolled to pay for the US$416 million construction costs and the viaduct is due for completion in mid-2010, reports Business News Americas. The link will allow vehicles to travel at average speeds of 90km/h at peak periods along its 22km stretch, compared with the 10km/h currently attained during rush hour by vehicles on the Periférico''s section. This would reduce average rush hour transit time along the section to 15 minutes for the estimated 35,000 vehicles/day travelling on the elevated highway, and 13 minutes for the estimated 115,000 vehicles/day expected to then travel along the regular highway, from the current 132 minute travel time along the section. Bids for the project are due on January 15th, 2008.
