A Look at Recycling Equipment

Here’s what we found when we went looking for the latest in chippers, grinders, and trommels.

New tub grinder
Vermeer

Vermeer’s new TG5000 tub grinder is the latest addition to their extensive line of organic waste recycling technology. A 12-foot flared tub opening allows for easy loading. The bottom of the tub flares outward from the tub wall to reduce bridging and to allow steady feeding of material. The unit features the Vermeer Duplex Drum, a single continuous-flow 36-inch V-cleat discharge belt. Aluminum wheel assemblies with super singles provide 11 inches of ground clearance. Optional features include a cab and loader, and the choice of either a 540-horsepower or 440-horsepower Tier 3 power plant.

Heavyweight brush chipper
Morbark

The new Typhoon 20 heavyweight brush chipper from Morbark offers a big 20-inch capacity. Features include 28.5-inch-wide drum and feed wheels for virtually no dead space; and six knife pockets that allow three full cuts per revolution, increasing chipping efficiency. Equipped with a 4- by 8-inch center beam and 66.5- by 40.5-inch infeed chute, the chipper accepts a wide variety of material and can be fed by auxiliary loading equipment. A redesigned pivot eliminates the yoke swing and increases down-pressure efficiency. The unit comes with a 2.5-inch lunet ring, 20,000-pound tandem axle suspension, and heavy-duty 0.375-inch chains and clasp hooks to secure it for towing.

Six-product separation
PowerScreen/Terex

PowerScreen, a Terex company, introduced several new screening machines at Bauma, including the Chieftain 1700. The 1700 was developed as a highly mobile two- and three-deck model with up to six-product separation. Features include less than 30-minute setup time; an adjustable high-amplitude two-bearing screen action for separating material into various specifications; hydraulic screen-angle adjustment; four hydraulically folding stockpile conveyors that fold and transport with the machine; full-access walkways for easy maintenance; a great stockpile capacity; and Tier 3 compliance.

Track-mounted horizontal grinder
Peterson Pacific Corporation

The Peterson model 6710B Track Mounted Horizontal Grinder is the newest model in their line of horizontal grinders. The grinder is designed for big jobs powered by a 1000-horsepower Caterpillar diesel engine. With a feed opening of 50 by 66 inches, the unit can process large stumps and is well-suited for land clearing operations. Features include Peterson’s Adaptive Control System II, which controls all components of the feed system; a feed system that automatically accelerates when the engine load is light, slows when the load is high, and reverses engine speed drops; and automatic monitoring of the engine temperature to vary the cooling fan speed and save power. The quick-change grate system makes it easy to customize grate configurations for a wide variety of finished materials. Peterson’s latching Impact Release System minimizes damage from contaminants in the feed material; their Impact Cushion System allows movement of the compression roll/anvil housing pivot shaft, cushioning impacts due to contaminants in the feed material. Shear pins above the cushion and a sensing circuit stop the engine to help protect the shaft from catastrophic damage in the event of a severe impact.

Horizontal-feed grinder
Bandit Industries

The Model 3680 Beast from Bandit Industries is a horizontal-feed waste-reduction machine for recycling brush, stumps, trees, railroad ties, asphalt, and much more. The newest application is processing shingle waste for an additive for asphalt. Various sizes of internal screens allow the operator to regulate the end product. The opening into the cuttermill is 30 by 60 inches. An in-feed conveyor height of approximately 4 feet allows for easy feed with no length limits. The 20-foot-long heavy-duty track-type conveyor carries material to the feed wheel, which then guides material into the cutting mechanism at a controlled rate. The cut is regulated, minimizing horsepower requirements and reducing operating costs. Available in 350 to 650 horsepower, the units under 400 horsepower are road legal without permits, while units above 400 horsepower are 9-feet wide and require an annual over-width permit only. The Beast is also available as a self-propelled unit.

High-volume trommel
McCloskey International

Designed for high-volume pre-screening and specialty composting operations, McCloskey International’s 4x4 733 Trommel is the largest portable trommel in their line of screening equipment. By replacing the chain drive with the Drum X-Change System’s wheel drive, the company says they eliminated costly service requirements from the equipment while achieving improvements in productivity and flexibility. The Drum X-Change System, as originally developed by McCloskey, uses a wheel-drive in place of traditional chain drives, allowing very quick changes of the screening drum. Instead of taking the trommel out of service for days at a time to change drums, the new system allows operators to simply lift out one drum and drop in another. According to the company, one or two operators working with a wheel loader or excavator are able to complete the switch in just an hour or two, or less.

Triple-screening plant
Screen Machine Industries

Screen Machine’s new Spyder 516T is a patented recycling/aggregate screening plant designed to screen rock, concrete, topsoil, sand, and gravel, and can produce three different sizes of product simultaneously. The machine features a 110-horsepower HP Cummins diesel engine, Caterpillar tracks, remote-control movement and operation, a 5- by 16-foot top screen deck, and a 5- by 12-foot bottom deck. Its design allows feeding from three sides with a loader or excavator. Capacity is upwards of 600 tons per hour.

Compact, drum-style chipper
Woodsman Chippers

The Woodsman Model 730Xtreme is a compact, drum-style brush chipper with a simple design that makes it easy to operate. The 18-inch-wide by 13-inch high in-feed opening allows material with multiple limbs and branches to be processed with less trimming. The drum — 24 inches in diameter by 18-inches wide — offers two full knife pockets with two knives per pocket. The unit weighs approximately 4,500 pounds, making it easy to tow and maneuver on jobsites.

Medium-duty chipper
Woods Equipment Company

The new medium-duty chipper model 8100 from Woods reduces tree limbs and debris up to 8 inches in diameter to a fine, usable mulch. The chipper is PTO-driven with a three-point hitch mount for use with compact tractors. Features include four heavy-duty, reversible steel blades mounted at 90 degrees for smooth operation, less vibration, and long blade life; a 360-degree rotating chute to discharge mulch where you want it; and either a gravity-feed or self-contained hydraulic feed to match material and conditions. An electronic feed-control sensor is also available to maintain optimal engine speed for grinding different diameter material.

Track-mounted grinder
CW Mill Equipment Company

CW Mill Equipment says their HTC-1462T Track Mounted HogZilla is a top choice for producers that require high production and simplified transport. According to the company, an 860-horsepower Cat engine powers the hammer mill, while providing efficiency and multiplied torque from the grinding industry’s only true torque converter mill drive system. The hydrostatic tracks reduce the amount of support equipment and manpower required to move the grinder and offer convenient wireless remote-control navigation. The track-mounted unit allows grinding in wet weather or on soft terrain; eliminates towing a truck and grinder on the jobsite; allows one-man operation; and saves time moving the grinder from pile to pile.

Compact, wheeled trommel
McCloskey International

McCloskey says their new compact, wheeled 516 trommel is the industry’s highest capacity trommel to offer pintle-hitch towability. The unit is designed to be pulled easily behind any heavy-duty truck or loading equipment normally found in construction and aggregate fleets. The 516 uses new fabrication techniques resulting in a compact construction that reduces its overall transport length by a third. Other features include a 6-yard feed hopper, 50% larger than previous models; a wider conveyor belt; 36-inch feed belt and stacker belts; a new 42-inch-wide oversize belt; and the same 5- by 16-foot drum screen as its predecessors. The trommel travels on a new tandem undercarriage specifically designed to minimize weight on the pintle hitch.

Drum-style chipper
Morbark

Morbark’s new 6-foot-capacity drum-style Clipper 6 brush chipper is a compact machine, complete with a 2-inch towing hitch and tubular steel frame for easy transport. The chipper has a standard auto-feed system, a 30- by 20-inch infeed chute, and a 10.5- by 7-inch throat opening. Its hydraulic drum brake brings the drum from full throttle to a complete stop in eight seconds. The direct drive coupling system protects the hydraulic components; the mechanical top-feed wheel comes with spring-assisted down pressure. Other features include perforated drum slides for increased discharge flow and a fixed discharge system with an adjustable chip deflector.

Tractor-driven chipper
Champion

Champion says the double-belt drive system on their tractor-driven CX300 and CX500 series of wood chippers allows them to achieve high-speed performance without demanding a lot of horsepower. The high-speed rotor design increases power takeoff speed from 540 to 1,350/1,700 revolutions per minute, depending on the model. An over-center clutch provides constant pressure against the belts to ensure that they are never out of adjustment, an industry exclusive, according to the company. A programmable automatic-feed sensor measures rotor rpm rather than engine rpm so that, in the case of a belt stop or excessive engine strain, the sensor will keep material from feeding into the chipper.
