Here are a few mowers and trimmers we found that can make the roadside vegetation management job a little bit easier. Rotary cutter
Mows difficult areas The Trackless Boom Flail tackles those areas that are difficult, unsafe, or impossible to mow — ditches, steep inclines, and around guardrails. Features include good visibility, quick removal and installation of attachments, hydrostatic control of ground speed to allow the operator to react quickly when approaching an obstruction, and a compact multi-terrain vehicle and boom flail. Rough-cut attachment Bobcat says their mower attachment is ideal for rough-cut applications, including road ditch rights-of-way, medians, and around signs. The attachment has three overlapping blades that cut clean with no skips. It eliminates driving over the grass before cutting and provides excellent visibility of the work area. Features include an adjustable cutting height from 2 to 5.5 inches in 0.5-inch increments, cutting widths of 71.5 and 89.5 inches, and blade rotation that stops when the mower is raised off the ground. The attachment is approved for select skid-steer loaders, compact track loaders, all-wheel-steer loaders, and Toolcat utility work machines. Useful on slopes The new ATZ z-rider mower from Hustler is especially useful on slopes. Features include certified two-post ROPS with four-post roll cage for operator security; white RC 26 wheel motors that provide more torque at lower pressures for improved slope performance; a deluxe suspension seat; added weight and wide stance for improved traction and balance; an 87-inch length for improved performance while backing uphill; bar-tread tires for improved traction and performance; and a hydraulic oil cooler for increased system life. Front-swing boom U.S. Mower’s Front Swing Boom Mower provides a full 200-degree boom swing from rear stow to full forward. This allows it to function as a shoulder mower, an over-the-rail mower, or a high-reach tree-line mower, reducing the need to own different mowers. The mower tackles severely overgrown roadways where front access is desired. Several mowing heads are available to fit different needs whether mowing brush or grass. Handles steep slopes The DewEze ATM-72LC mower from Harper Industries handles steep slopes, ditches, and flat ground quickly, comfortably, and safely. The 72-inch mower features a 30-horsepower liquid-cooled diesel engine; a hydraulic deck lift system; and a low-maintenance hydraulic system that controls the blade drives, power steering, propulsion, and automatic leveling — without belts. The company says its hydrostatic propulsion and power steering make it maneuverable, efficient, and easy to operate. Single-wing rotary The newest addition to the Woods Equipment line of rotary cutters is the single-wing, 10.5-foot BW1260. This Batwing’s innovative single-wing design allows trimming and mowing close to objects; choose a right or left wing. Other features include a cutting capacity up to 4 inches in diameter; a 13-inch-deep side frame for maximum material capacity; easy quick-change blade pins; and a smooth, sloped deck to shed water and debris. Articulated undercarriage The four-wheel-drive Geo-Boy from Jarraff Industries features an articulated undercarriage that allows precise control and movement, as well as a low ground-pressure rating. The cab puts all controls within easy reach of the operator; controls are clearly marked and labeled. The cutter shreds and clears dense brush, undergrowth, whole trees, and more. Easy access and maintenance are designed into the unit, as well as mobility and maneuverability to operate in almost any condition. The unit also includes onboard compressed air for removing dirt and debris, as well as powering pneumatic tools. The company says the Geo-Boy is the largest brush cutter in its class with 200- and 250-horsepower engine options. Wet blade system Diamond Mowers’ environmentally friendly Wet Blade mowing system applies a precise amount of herbicide to the stem of the plant at the time of cut with no airborne drift or soil contamination. This system increases efficiency, reduces labor costs, and allows the consolidation of equipment. The Wet Blade Mower system comes in 6-, 8-, and 15-foot sizes; boom mowers are also available. Rugged workhorse The Axtreme Boom Mower from Alamo is a rugged workhorse available in lengths of 18, 22, and 25 feet, with a telescoping 28-foot mower coming soon. The mower reaches embankments, over guardrails, and up into trees with ease. It cuts grass, weeds, and limbs, and can handle trees up to 8 inches in diameter. Cutting heads are available in many sizes. Professional trimmer Shindaiwa’s new T242 trimmer was designed with the commercial user in mind. The trimmer has a two-stroke engine with a two-piston ring and four-bolt chrome-plated cylinder for durability and performance; a full anti-vibration system for all-day operation; and an electronic ignition system that provides quick, easy starts. It weighs less than 11 pounds, making it easy to handle. Grass trimmer/brush cutter The TBC-255PF, a new grass trimmer/brush cutter from Tanaka, weighs only 11.8 pounds. Features include a solid steel drive shaft, a 5-inch semi-automatic cutting head, a 23-fluid-ounce see-through fuel tank, a low-profile cutting guard, and a one-year commercial warranty. Flex-wing mower Alamo says their Falcon 15 Hydraulic Flex-Wing Mower is the newest flex-wing to hit the market. The mower has the ruggedness of a mechanical mower with the power of hydraulics, according to the company. Boasting wing lift and blade shutoff from the tractor cab, this mower cuts grass, weeds, and 3.5-inch-thick brush. |
