The Irish firm NTR has announced the establishment of a North American recycling business called Greenstar North America. Along with the creation of the North American business, the company announced that it has acquired majority stakes in four U.S.-based recycling companies. The companies include Mid America Recycling Co., Delta Management Group, Recycle Management Co., and Todd Heller Inc. (first reported in RecyclingToday.com). The acquisitions give Greenstar North America s a network of 15 processing facilities and will be handling more than 1 million tons of recyclables a year.

The facilities give the company visible positions in Pittsburgh with Recycle Management Co.; a sizable stake in the glass, container and paper recycling markets in the Pennsylvania area with Todd Heller Inc.; a position in Illinois with Delta Management Group, which is headquartered in Normal, Ill., and has more than 4,500 managed retail and commercial locations throughout North America; and a sizable presence in the Midwest and Texas area with Mid America Recycling.

Greenstar North America, headquartered in Houston, will be led by Steve Ragiel as CEO. Other top management at the company include Dan Shoener, CFO; Dennis Soriano, Senior VP; Tim Herman, VP of Sales and Marketing; and Brian Gaughan, VP, Commodity Marketing.

The company’s focus will be on processing, commodity upgrading and trading of recyclables in North America. In announcing the move, Greenstar said it does not plan to enter either the landfill or solid waste collection business.

"The economics of recycling are becoming increasingly attractive," said NTR Chief Executive Officer, Jim Barry. "Resource depletion, in addition to an ever-changing energy market has created business opportunities for recycled products. Through the application of new technologies, opportunities exist to divert significant quantities of product away from disposal, into marketable recycled products, paving the way for long-term, sustainable growth."
