ABSTRACT

Mastic asphalt for use as pavement quality surfacing is an "old" product in the sense that it has been around for some time. It can be demonstrated that the product, when appropriately designed, can withstand heavy  traffic loading over long periods. It requires minimal attention and maintains sufficient flexibilty to be able to absorb movements of the substrate and base structure, subjected to a broad band of temperature fluctuations, such as may occure on bridge decks, and particularly steel decks.
