Cold Planing
What is the typical size of material after Cold Planing?
 95% passing 2" sieve

Top How deep can you cut?
Some machines can cut over 10" in a single pass, but it is easier to make more than one pass if the material is too deep.

Top How wide can you cut?
Machines are made that can cut from 3 in. to 14 ft. in one pass. Cutting drums are made in incremental widths. If varied cut widths are needed, then more than one pass is required, while overlapping the previous cut.

Top What production can be expected?
Larger machines can produce from 100 ton to 200 ton per hour, depending on the particular machine and asphalt pavement conditions. Concrete pavement removal is much slower.

Top What about loading the milled material onto trucks?
The larger machines pick up the milled material and load the trucks while they are moving. Small machines leave the milled material to be picked up with a loader.

Top Can you drive on the milled surface?
As soon as the surface has been swept clean, it can be opened to public traffic.

Top How long can the milled surface be left before resurfacing?
Many agencies require resurfacing within 10 days. Some areas with extremely high traffic volumes are paved the same day. Milled areas can be left indefinitely, if the underlying asphalt is in good condition.

Top What are the weather limitations?
Cold Planing is not affected by weather. Resurfacing may be delayed until favorable weather conditions return.

Top What about Cold Planing at night?
A lot of the work in high traffic volume areas is currently done at night to accommodate the public.

Top What does Cold Planing cost?
Cold Planing is less expensive than the cost of placing a leveling course. It is much less than the cost of reconstruction.

Top Is the milled material reusable?
Yes, it is recyclable, as either a road base material or reused in new asphalt.

Top What is micro-milling?
Micro-milling, sometimes referred to as ''carbide grinding'', uses many more cutting teeth and produces a much finer, smoother textured surface, typically 0.2 inches. Minor surface irregularities can be removed inexpensively. It is being used by some state agencies as a final riding surface, not requiring an overlay.
