Asphalt Overlay

This project provides for the annual rehabilitation of asphalt arterial and collector class City streets. The City of Champaign’s Pavement Management System provides staff with basic information on the existing pavement condition, which help to identify the type and extent of maintenance activity required. This computer-based system takes the results of street surveys and generates a pavement condition index (PCI) for each street. Engineering staff reviews the list of work recommended by the Pavement Management System, and based on additional field inspections, develop a tentative list of work. Work locations are usually concentrated in a general area of the City to minimize mobilization of contractor equipment and personnel. This project is advertised and awarded to a contractor annually and is managed by City Engineering Staff. This project includes construction items such as pavement patching, curb and gutter replacement, sidewalk ramp construction, minor storm sewer repairs, manhole adjustments, bituminous concrete cold milling, bituminous concrete overlays, pavement marking restoration and other related construction items. Funding for the Asphalt Overlay Project is made available through the State of Illinois Motor Fuel Tax Fund. This project is utilized on high-volume arterial and collector class streets.
