Cold In-Place Recycling is the immediate use of RAP on the same roadway. The State of New Mexico has done more than 120 such projects using SemMaterials technology since 1984. Many New Mexico highways have also been paved with stockpiled, processed and treated RAP. The cold in-situ process involves milling the existing pavement, screening, crushing oversize particles, mixing with new asphalt emulsion binder, and placing the material as an asphalt treated base for subsequent overlay with new plant mixed bituminous pavement. The work is completed in a single pass of an equipment train that occupies one lane of the roadway. New Mexico has concluded that the performance will far exceed the 10 year service life assumed during design. On a life cycle cost basis of 45 such projects, New Mexico estimates an average savings of $12,109 per lane-mile for the in-situ process over a traditional mill and overlay. Pavements ranging from Interstates to rural roads have been paved using the recycled materials. |
