Boston Considers Recycled Sidewalks

An initiative has been presented to the Boston City Council proposing that the city begin installing sidewalks made from recycled tires instead of concrete, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Supporters say using the rubberized material will make sidewalks less prone to cracking because of encroaching tree roots. According to the report, repairs would be quieter because jackhammers wouldn’t be needed.

The rubber sidewalks are made from a series of tiles made from shredded tires and polyurethane.
