The Zoning and Planning Commission of Colchester, Conn., has decided to continue a public hearing on a proposed amendment that would allow the recycling of products such as asphalt at existing gravel pits in residential areas, according to a report in the Regional Standard (Colchester, Conn.).

While supporters of the proposed amendment tout the convenience and reduced costs of having such materials available locally, some residents have voiced opposition to the proposal.

A citizens’ group, Concerned Citizens of Colchester, have voiced concerns about resulting asphalt dust and the potential for water and air pollution, according to the report.

The proposed amendment would allow recycling only at existing excavation sites, for no more than 10 days per month and no more than three days consecutively, according to the report. The amendment also restricts the hours of recycling to Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The commission heard two hours of testimony on Sept. 20 and decided to extend the public hearing to its meeting on Oct. 4.
